Continuing with our artist interviews this we interview Electomagnetic Impulses:
Question 1: What’s the name of your band? What’s the origin of that name? Have you changed the band’s name before?
Electromagnetic Impulses.
The idea behind the name was due to a book called ‘The Zero Point Field’ (which i have now lost
).
The book explains amongst other things, a zero point field of gravity, where things can exist in more than one places at once.
Electromagnetic Impulses, are mentioned severall times, and hence i got the name.
Question 2: Please list the name and respective instrument of each band member.
Jason Mallett (Producer)
Question 3: What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
Musical Style is ‘Electronic Dance Music’ (EDM)….with EDM music one has a variety of genres, probably more than one hundred.
I preffere to put them all under one roof, and call it EDM !!!
I am inspired by …
Infected Mushroom
Kosheen
Faithless
Orbital
Pendulum
Hybrid
Way Out West
Dave Angel
Joey Beltram
Andy C
Brisk
Seduction
Air
Pink Floyd
Dire Straights
Red Hot Chillie Peppers
and ALL the artists on my NING SITE
Question 4: How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?
doesn’t apply to me…im on my own in this (so to speak)…
Question 5: When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?
I initially launched myself as ‘Electromagnetic Impulses’ in Feb 2007.
I was inspired by 10 years of making music on various platforms, such as synth, guitar, piano…but i have never learn’t to read music.
Question 6: Are you signed to a record label? Are you a member of any music organizations?
I’m signed to ATOM SOUNDS , and i am about to become a member of the ‘Musicians Union’ sending application form tomorrow actually …lol
Question 7: What can you tell us about your instruments? (i.e., Are you subject to brand loyalty or will you play with whatever’s available? What made you choose the instruments you have now? Was it cost or was it a style/model/brand/colour preference?
The only instrument i currently have is a behringer midi keyboard, which is still in its box.
As i am going to try and master ‘Ableton Live’, which is a gr8 programme to use in conjunction with a midi keyboard.
Question 8: Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?
I have had my music ‘played out’ at various clubs locally, but never done a live performance
Question 9: Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? Do you have a set play list?
Im working on a ’set’ which i plan to perform live.
At some point in the future, once i have ‘mastered’ the art of Dj’ing, either with vinyl, or most likley CD (as its cheaper to get my music onto CD, rather than press onto vinyl !!!
Question 10: Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?
I needless to say, write all of my own tracks.
I will create a track, to correspond with the mood that i am feeling at the time.
Question 11: Could you briefly describe the music-making process?
I usually strart with a simple kick drum, a kind of 4/4 beat..just to use as a metronome really !!!
i then start thinking about snares, high hats…and create a few simple riifs, maybe 8 or 16 bars long.
I spend some time creating bass, synth riffs again about 16 bars long.
By this time, i start making more detailed subtle changes to the above elements..add more drum loops over the top.
Once i have structured the track, to make it sound more like a ‘track;’ than a simple arrangement of sounds, i might add some vocal elements.
Apply effects, run through the mixer..and that’s basicy it.
Question 12: What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?
doesn’t really apply to me
Question 13: How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
My music is always ‘evolving’ i strive to create a very ‘raw’ sound that i have complete control over, this is why i like to use Fruity Loops, As i feel that i am ‘incontrol’ of what i amj creating, and not relying on random effects .
Question 14: What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
My main challenge has been the continuing struggle between, having a life, doing a day job, and writing, self promoting my music, and networking, both in the reaL world, and on the net.
Im slowly overcoming this issue, by focusing my attentions, on a few projects, at a time, rather than trying to …to coin a phrase “change the world over-night”…and its woprking.
Question 15: What’s your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?
I guess i do go to bed some nights, thinking about being on stage in front of thousands of people…who are all be dancing to my music.
That’s about all i want….i guess i would be happy with a little fame…but only to those that followed the music…i would not like to be world or internationally famous….just control the world from my house….lol
Question 16: What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?
If you want to from your own band…then go do it.
If you want to be a producer like me…with only yourself involved, then you need lots of free time, and shit loads of patience.
Question 17: How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?
my web site is
www.electromagneticimpulses.com
my latest album, which has not yet been released is available to stream…and a few free downloads…at Lat FM…link is…
http://www.last.fm/music/Electromagnetic+Impulses/String+Theory
Question 18: Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?
I would like to thank
DJ Crimson Death….for being a believer, a brilliant freind, and trustworthy.
Pixieguts, for being my female dopple-ganger on the other side of the planet
Debbie from Mad Bouncy Dogs, for all the help with the web site, and all the continued support and advice…and for putting up with my phone calls.
Karen and William from Atom Sounds, for your continued support, help, promotion, you do this continually and in silence, you know that i am aware of this, and i’ll continue to be with you guys for a long time.
You are the TROJANS !!!
Martin from Green Dragon Media.
If it wasn’t for his podcasts i might have not been soooo inspired at the beginning of this ‘journey’ over 18 months ago
Mark AKA the Projectionist for his help, advice, and support of ning, via the ‘Electric Tea Party’ podcast.
And everyone else i know
Question 19: Any last words?
