Artist of the Week: Northcape

NorthcapeNorthcape has a superb following and currently has well over 100,000 scrobbles at last.fm and has a strong following of loyal fans.

Northcape is the ongoing work of a British artist (currently living in Brighton, England) who has been producing electronic music for quite some time. Northcape’s music is mainly instrumental and blends influences from a wide range of different styles, in particular trance, beats and breaks, IDM, ambient and downbeat electronica, always with a strong melodic element. The music is made in a very intuitive way instead of attempting to create a specific type of track or to fit into any particular genre. Nevertheless, Northcape has developed a distinctive and unifying style, which although it sometimes faces the dark side of life normally retains an essential optimism. Although most tracks (so far) don’t have lyrics, they are all drawn strongly from personal experience. This approach leads to something that is both enjoyable to listen to and refreshingly different.

IMIsound Spotlight Artist: Alix

If you love psychedelia and rock’n’roll, but above all if you want to listen to a stupendous female voice (a mixture of Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, PJ Harvey, Chrissie Hynde, and a female version of Robert Plant) then Alix is your band. Imagine a dinner party with 2/4 of the first edition of Fu Manchu, John Garcia in his historical guise of Unida and the odd waiter here and there provided by Spirit Caravan and Masters of Reality. Four albums to date: Alix (1997), Cuore in Bocca (1999), Nessun Brivido (2001), Ground (2004), which have made them famous in the stoner circuits of half of Europe. In 2000 the group shared the stage of the Heineken Jammin’ Festival in Imola with Muse, Guano Apes, Primal Scream and Rage Against the Machine, as winners of the first edition of RockrEvolution. In 2003, the European tour with the Norwegian group Pawnshop and the Swedish group Dozer earned Alix the title of “Italian Psychedelic Groove Rock Band”. The year 2004 saw them on tour again in Europe, this time with the American group The Hidden Hand, the new band of Scott “Wino” Weinrich (famous for his participation in Dave Grohl’s Probot project). An exceptional review of the album Ground came from the English magazine Kerrang! which awarded the band with a (KKKK). In 2005/2006 the group performed live in various tours both in Italy and abroad. A new album to be recorded in February 2008 will be mixed by Steve Albini, producer of Nirvana, Stooges, Pixies and many others. The album will be recorded at Red House Recordings in Senigallia.

Recommended Artist: Akashic Crow’s Nest

Akashic Crow’s Nest is one of several recording projects undertaken by C.P. McDill (other projects include Saluki Regicide, Djinnestan, Rowboat Magicians, Tree Helicopter and Rolling Calf Sinfonette).

Representing a specific facet of McDill’s experimentation with sound, ACN tracks are produced by converting visual images into sound, in the manner of a piano roll, and then given only slight enhancement through the use of effects such as delays and compression. Technically this falls into the category of “generative music” but it is most appreciated by those who are drawn to ambient, dark ambient, and minimal/noise music.

All Akashic Crow’s Nest albums are released for free download on the web, through the netlabels Webbed Hand Records and Treetrunk Records, hosted by the Internet Archive.

Artist of the Week: The Wimshurst’s Machine

The Wimshurst’s Machine is a project born by the music passion of each component and a mad idea, developed between friends and colleagues with little time to play together “in person”. Thanks to modern softwares and computers (as Propellerhead Reason, Apple Garage Band, Symphonic Orchestra, Sound Studio Pro and Apple Soundtrack), it has become possible to play together even when living apart, recording each track separated from the others with modern “home made studios”.
