Artist of the Week: Northcape

NorthcapeNorthcape has a superb following and currently has well over 100,000 scrobbles at last.fm and has a strong following of loyal fans.

Northcape is the ongoing work of a British artist (currently living in Brighton, England) who has been producing electronic music for quite some time. Northcape’s music is mainly instrumental and blends influences from a wide range of different styles, in particular trance, beats and breaks, IDM, ambient and downbeat electronica, always with a strong melodic element. The music is made in a very intuitive way instead of attempting to create a specific type of track or to fit into any particular genre. Nevertheless, Northcape has developed a distinctive and unifying style, which although it sometimes faces the dark side of life normally retains an essential optimism. Although most tracks (so far) don’t have lyrics, they are all drawn strongly from personal experience. This approach leads to something that is both enjoyable to listen to and refreshingly different.

New IMIsound Artist: Strip In Midi Side

“Strip in Midi Side” came to light in the summer 2007 as the brand new project of Luigi Buonaiuto (Giotto), Emanuele Sirica (Maks), and Marco DeFilppo (Amon). The team, already tried and tested with years of experience collaborating in various cover bands, immediately focused on an intensive phase of song-writing, searching for a sound that was able to blend a rock/metal/post-punk background with an electronic sound (synths and drum-machine), heir of two decades of avant-guarde Anglo/American but mostly German sounds. Since December 2007 the band has been giving amazing live performances in which the “show-entertainment” feature, together with powerful rhythms, has created a mix of rock, avant-guarde electronica and entertainment that has become the band’s trademark: known as the “stripping experience”.

New IMIsound Artist: It-Alien

Fabio Napodano aka It-Alien (the italian alien) composes and plays his music as a hobby, drawing his inspiration from a mixture of reason and emotion: the former shaping and leading the latter. Disinterested in any form of commercialization, Fabio has no concern for limits of genre, length and audience, creating first of all and above all for his own personal enjoyment, giving total freedom to his self-taught sensibility. Through his personal experience, however, he has traced out and followed a pathway made up of progressive rock, contemporary classical, jazz, dark ambient and psychedelic electronica. His guideline can be resumed in his own words: “To have a style means to invent once and sell forever; to have creativity means to invent forever and never sell”.

Remergence track Probably (Styler Remix) reviewed

Remergence - Probably (Styler Remix)
Hear The Track
——————————–
Like a great many electronic minded musician, I whiled away acres of time a few years ago playing around with programs like Rebirth and the like. I’ve always been a fan of the original instruments so it follows that I would be interested in a software version of it. Having spent the aforementioned acres of time seeing what Rebirth and it’s endless clones were all about. My electronica phase, probably all the good, came to a rapid end. The chief reason (no pun intended) that comes about is because if there is one musical genre that really gnaws on my patience it’s techno and the ilk. Obviously I am foaming at the mouth because I have just spent some time listening to Remergence’s version of the music I must not mention.

Coming to a track like this from my viewpoint, there is bound to be a bit of antipathy, but Remergence chooses a much lighter and coherent groove than you would expect; mainly based around a cut up female vocal that works extraordinarily well with such an out and out electronica blitz. I think it’s that which saves Probably from an early visit from the Delete Button. That isn’t to say that the musical side of this is somehow bad or wrong. It isn’t, and I always look hard for spare ammo to lob at artists, as you all well know.

Where it does step out of the ordinary is in the use and inclusion of that female vocal I mentioned. It gives the track that essential spice it would have otherwise have missed. At that stage of the game, a techno track is a techno track, know what I mean? The vocal enters the picture initially as a series of notes before developing into a full blown yo mama vocal vocoded to within an inch of its life which - as it happens - is exactly what I wanted to hear from this genre. Not sure if this is a real vocalist or not (not samples for nstance), but if it is, that is a voice well worth hearing.

Surprisingly commercial electronica. Recommended.

IMIsound Spotlight Artist: Fabryka

The “Fabryka” project began at the end of 2004, when Stefano Milella (programming, air-fx, bass guitar, synth, acoustic and electronic drums), Tiziana Felle (voice, guitars, bass guitar), Giovanni Chiapparino (piano, synth, bass, drums, accordion, vibraphone), Agostino Scaranello (bass), and Pasquale Luisi (visual maker) first got together. Although still in its early days, the band is already highly considered and has taken part in the main shows of the music scene. The project aspires at the harmonious blending of acoustic and electronic music, of refined and improvised visuals, all performed or re-created on stage. It is an attempt to merge reality and fiction, fairy tales and facts, words and metaphors. “Fabryka” could be defined as the “moment” in which the different facets of a single expression manage to live together. The band’s name is taken from a Kieslowski documentary film, but it is also inspired by the idea of art as a ‘factory’, an assembly line where numerous little “pieces” are carefully assembled into a final product which does not openly reveal its underlying components: as so often happens in art between thought and expression, feeling and showing, imagination and production.

Dream Lab - Cosmotherapy

Dream Lab - CosmotherapyDream Lab aka Stuart Elliot and Emil Anderberg have come up with one of the most enjoyable chill out albums that I’ve ever heard for years.

From the very start of the Cosmotherpy you are taken away from the world into a relaxed state of mind with subtle drifting keyboards, gentle beats and each track flows wonderfully out of your speakers into you ears unobtrusively.

Even the lyrics on the tracks “I’ll Guide You” and “Silver Skies” are gently and a pleasure to listen to, giving the CD that ‘I want to hear it again’ quality.

Ranging from Psydub to Progressive, featuring the amazing vocal work of Seka and Susi Lavender (Cling), including the remixes of Marco Torrance, Ferdy & Edwin and Easily EmbarrassedDream Lab have surpassed themselves with this release, the whole album just never ceases to amaze and the more your listen the more you hear those sounds that you may not of noticed before.

I can quite honestly say that since I received my copy of the CD it’s not been out of my CD Player or off my iPod, it’s a complete joy to listen to.

You can purchase Cosmotherapy from: CDBaby, iTunes and Cardamar Music.
